Most of us don't officially start our day off until we have had the first sip of our morning tea or coffee. In fact, maybe all of us sleep our way through brushing out teeth or our morning commute to work, and only fully wake up when we reach our everyday lovable local coffee shop. For you it may be somewhere that's warm and cosy, somewhere that plays acoustic jazz - where most people are dressed in dungarees and there are more beanbags than chairs. Or maybe it's your nearest Starbucks or Costa, filled with people just like you - eager to get their morning coffee before work. Either way, one thing you all have in common is a love for the bean. But have you ever considered what happens to your cup once you've finished your coffee? Sure, you discard it, and never see it again. But if you and all of those other people who, like you - love coffee, throw away their cup; then that is a relatively large amount of cups being thrown away. If you're concerned about how much plastic you're throwing away and are looking for methods to reduce your waste, then perhaps you should look into a reusable cup like KeepCup. But before you do, be sure to look at our customer reviews for personal experiences and opinions on KeepCup, and whether their products would be suited to you.
KeepCup was started by a cafe business called Bluebag in Melbourne 1998. As the business grew, owners Abigail and her brother Jamie became increasingly concerned about the volume of packaging waste their business and customers consumed. They looked into purchasing and seeling reusable cups as an alternative to disposable ones, but observed that not only were existing options unsuitable for speciality coffee, they hadn't won the hearts of consumers. On the other hand, cermaic mugs were heavy, breakable, needing to be heated prior to filling and impossible to dose correctly with milk and coffee. Thermoses were too bulky, and meant that where the coffee shot had to be poured into the thermos, the crema on the shot would be destroyed. It was only when Abigail was heating milk in her daughter's sippy cup she realised the sheer waste that would be generated if she gave her daughter milk in a disposable cup to then discard it every day. This seemed wasteful, and even more so when Abigail realised she too does this with coffee - twice a day! After this, Abigail and Jamie realised that their cafe experience was invaluable in providing input to make KeepCup work behind the coffee machine as well as for the user, and so, after four years (and a ton of help from design professionals) KeepCup kickstarted again. What followed was a complete behavioural change across Melbourne and the rest of the world. Since then, they have opened warehouses in India and Los Angeles. Since 2009, over 3 million KeepCups have been sold, and KeepCups are now sold in 32 countries across the world.
